BLOG: The Harley-Davidson X440: A Game-Changer in the Motorcycle World


The Harley-Davidson X440, a product of the collaboration between Harley-Davidson and Hero MotoCorp, has been making waves in the motorcycle industry since its launch in India. This bike, which was entirely developed in India by Hero at its Centre for Innovation and Technology with inputs from Harley in Milwaukee, is a testament to the capabilities of Hero MotoCorp in building a premium motorcycle.


The X440 is powered by a newly-developed 440 cc motor that likes to be revved and offers a strong low and mid-range. The engine generates 28PS at 6000rpm and 38Nm at 4000rpm, with 90 percent of the torque available as early as 2000rpm. The engine is coupled with a six-speed gearbox and features a slip and assist clutch for enhanced ease of riding. 


The bike's design draws inspiration from the renowned Harley-Davidson XR1200, featuring a retro-themed circular LED headlight, a sleek and contemporary LED daytime running light strip bearing the etched logo of 'Harley-Davidson', and full LED lighting as a standard feature. The square-shaped 13.5-liter peanut-style fuel tank contributes to its robust aesthetic and complements the cohesive one-piece seat design.


The X440 is offered in three distinctive variants known as 'Denim,' 'Vivid,' and 'S.' Each variant showcases unique elements, from simple yellow color schemes and blacked-out engine fins to meticulously machined elements and premium color tones. The top-tier variant includes a Bluetooth-enabled TFT console that provides turn-by-turn navigation, call and SMS alerts, among other functionalities. 


The chassis of the X440 utilises KYB USD cartridge forks and gas-filled twin rear shocks with seven steps of pre-load adjustment. Braking at the front comprises a 320mm disc and Bybre caliper, with a 240mm disc at the rear of the bike. The ABS on the new Harley is two-channel only which is unsurprising at this price point. The all-up ready-to-ride weight of the new Harley X440 is claimed to be 190kg.


The Harley-Davidson X440 is competitively priced, with the Denim variant starting at Rs 2.29 lakh, the Vivid variant at Rs 2.49 lakh, and the top-of-the-line S variant at Rs 2.69 lakh, all prices listed as ex-showroom. Despite its intent as an affordable option, the Harley-Davidson X440 offers an array of impressive features, making it a value-friendly choice for motorcycle enthusiasts.
